DAY-19: The Pick-Up & On To Canterbury (Sun, Sep 10, 2017)

DAY-19: The Pick-Up & On To Canterbury

Day – 19: Sunday, September 10, 2017

Starting Location: Heathrow Airport, London, England, UK
Ending Location: Canterbury, England, UK

Today for Sheila and I would be a day of rest, laundry and planning for the upcoming days in England but the big event for the day was the rendezvous with Diane and Greg.

After breakfast, our morning was dedicated to laundry. The hotel provided the machines, the tokens and detergent, we had to supply the labor.

We had followed via Flight Tracker the progress of Diane's & Greg's flight so we made our way over to Terminal #5 by about 4 PM to await the arrival.

With a landing at just about 4 PM they were through immigration and customs by 4:40 when we met them in the arrivals area of Terminal #5 beneath the COSTA sign.

They came out with two trolleys loaded with bags. They're staying for three weeks so that would be about 2 bags of clothing/week.

Fortunately we had pretty much emptied the car of baggage because we filled it to the brim with the Maxwell loot.

Though we would be leaving the area today headed for Canterbury we first went by the hotel to reconfigure our baggage and give Diane and Greg a chance to "freshen up".

By 6 PM or so we were on our way and arrived in Canterbury around 8 PM in time of drinks and dinner.

The scallops with green peas cooked in a bacon sauce starter was the best plate at the table though the pork chop was a good one as well.

Our bartender was new to the area having moved down from the Sheffield area. He had one of the strongest cockney accents/dialects I have ever heard. Another interesting character was our dinner table server, he was a student of economics in Canterbury though originally from Latvia. That was close enough to Estonia for Sheila to engage him in a dialogue about the Russians, NATO jets and the singing revolution, somehow we missed the Jeb Bush encounter.
Blue Kir

Somewhere between the dining room and the bar we lost Diane & Greg but nevertheless Sheila and I stopped in for a nightcap, her second Kir, a bluish looking concoction, which over our stay became a new drink for the bartender's repertoire.

As with many of the previous days, we've been watching Hurricane Irma closely, looks like today is the big day for Florida, hoping for the best.
