DAY-21: Canterbury Tales
Day – 21: Tuesday, September 12, 2017
Starting Location: Canterbury, England, UK
Ending Location: Heathrow Airport, London, England, UK
After breakfast we checked out of the hotel but left the car for a walk into Canterbury; we were headed for the Canterbury Cathedral one of the oldest cathedrals in Britain and may be throughout Europe dating from as far back as the 6th century. Before that, here are a few pictures from the hotel.
Our walk took onto the busy streets of town, where we came upon numerous students in graduation robes and caps. As it turned out, the Canterbury College was having its graduation today in the cathedral. There were hundreds of graduates, friends and family members milling about waiting for the ceremonies to begin. Turns out that the students finished school back in June but they're just now getting around to holding the graduation ceremony.
Our tour of the cathedral was limited in that the nave of the chapel was off limits today due to the graduation. Nevertheless there was plenty to see. As with so many cathedrals this one is striking in its architecture and its use of stained glass. This is the storied place of the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170 and all that followed his death.
We returned to the hotel via the main street with a fruit market stop for some fresh "last of the season" plums.
From Canterbury we found our way back to our hotel at Heathrow where we had drinks and dinner, a pan-fried Bream for me.
The evening was spent planning our last full day in England and beginning our preps for traveling to Ireland to officially kick-off the 2017 SMART.
